When I opened my Laguna Beach studio, years ago, my intent was to paint portraits of great teachers dedicated to the freedom of humanity.
The first painting was of Thoreau. He was the originator of peaceful rebellion in civil disobedience. He spent time in jail in lieu of paying taxes toward an unjust war, and wrote a treatise on civil disobedience to stand up for one’s principles.
Ghandi, my second painting, is in my thinking, one of the greatest men to grace the planet. He used Thoreau’s writings on civil disobedience to formulate his own philosophy, proceeding to teach the world lessons in respect, pride and human value. Ghandi led his people in peaceful pursuit of freedom from oppression, and set an example for other great men to follow.
